The voice behind 27 Interviews comes in front of the camera this time. Meet Lex Chamizo. While at her place of healing, we discussed her own journey of sobriety and the practice she's built because of it.
"I don't believe that there is just one way to get sober, one way to stay sober and be in recovery. There's so many different ways to access healing, different paths we can take. For me, Reiki has been one of those many paths in my recovery and healing process."
What she offers
Lex describes her work as intuitively weaving together different healing modalities, tailored to whoever's in front of her.
"For somatic practice — body therapy — we do trauma release exercises and Thought Field Therapy tapping. For energetic practices, working with the unseen realms, that's energy healing. I also work with plants, and AcuDetox — ear acupuncture."
Where it came from
"It's not something I envisioned when I was younger. But when they'd ask, what do you want to be when you grow up — I don't think I had a real answer. It was more of a visceral feeling, wanting to be of service, wanting to give. I think that's innate in my being. My own journey of recovery, and where I am now compared to where I was, has inspired so much of how I've created my practice as an offering to others."
Recognizing the problem
"I looked at everyone around me and knew the effect alcohol was giving me was different than what it was giving them. I drank, and I felt whole — this is the feeling I've been needing. And I knew, in that moment, this wasn't going to be good. I don't know how to explain it."
What sobriety gifted her
"One is the desire to live, versus the will to live. There's an underlying tone of the will to live throughout my story — even in the hardest moments — something in me scraping by, fighting to live, but no yearning to. Now I get excited to wake up and live my life. I always say, I didn't get sober to live a half-assed life. If I'm going to do this thing sober, we're going to really do it."
Rebirth, mid-conversation
We asked Lex what phase of the life-death-rebirth cycle she's in right now, and got an answer that was happening almost in real time.
"I literally just woke up from a death portal. I was reflecting this morning — I think I was dying the last two weeks and didn't even realize it, until you're on the other side and look back and think, oh wow, I was in some fire for a minute. I almost feel like a baby bird right now. Definitely in the rebirth phase."
Her pick from the original 27 Club
"It's going to be Kurt Cobain. Fellow Pisces — I know that's cliché, but I remember being a kid and just being struck by the way he spoke and what he spoke on. The first time I read his letter, where he writes, 'I'm just a sad sappy Pisces' — I was maybe twelve, and it just stuck with me."
